LONDON:The US drugmaker is to start selling a Viagra-like erectile dysfunction treatment in the US, after it failed to win approval from the European Medicines Agency.
A spokeswoman told The Financial Times that the company’s marketing efforts were part of “a strategy to help patients and their doctors improve the quality of their healthcare”.
“The company is working on an educational programme to help patients learn how to take a daily pill of Viagra and have it used,” the spokeswoman said. “We will take the initiative to promote the educational programme to physicians.”
Viagra is the brand name for the drug sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence).

“While we are not pursuing any new drug that may be marketed, we believe it is the best product we have ever produced to date, and will continue to support the development of innovative treatments for erectile dysfunction.”
Pfizer said it was “working closely with the regulatory authorities and stakeholders” to ensure Viagra is safe for use in patients and to “prevent any adverse effects”.
